Scrap glossary

What is Shredded scrap?

Shredded scrap is ferrous scrap that has been torn into small, fist-sized pieces by a large shredding machine. Shredders take mixed light scrap such as car bodies and appliances, then use magnets to separate the steel from plastic, rubber and non-ferrous metals.

Because it is dense and uniform, shredded scrap loads easily and melts efficiently, so mills often pay close to HMS rates for it.

The non-ferrous mix that comes out of a shredder, sometimes called zorba, is sold separately for its aluminium, copper and brass.

Most shredded scrap used by large Pakistani mills is imported; local supply comes from dealers who own baling and shearing equipment.
