Scrap glossary
What is UBC (used beverage cans)?
UBC stands for used beverage cans: empty aluminium soft-drink and juice cans collected for recycling. Cans are among the easiest aluminium to recycle and can be melted back into new can sheet.
Cans are light, so you need many of them to make a kilogram; crushing them saves space and makes transport worthwhile.
Buyers pay less if cans contain liquid, sand or steel cans mixed in. Use a magnet to remove steel food tins.
UBC usually earns less per kg than aluminium window sections or utensils because of its coatings, but more than mixed cast aluminium in many markets.
