Stainless steel contains chromium and, in better grades, nickel. The nickel content is what makes 304 and 316 scrap worth much more than ordinary iron, while cheaper 200-series stainless sells for less.
How to identify each grade
304 stainless
Kitchen sinks, food tanks and good-quality utensils; non-magnetic.
316 stainless
Marine, chemical and pharma equipment; contains molybdenum.
200-series / mixed
Cheap utensils and decorative pipe; may be slightly magnetic.
What affects the stainless steel scrap price?
- Nickel content and the international nickel price.
- Grade identification: 316 > 304 > 200-series.
- Attachments such as iron frames, plastic and motors.
Where does stainless steel scrap come from?
- Hotel and restaurant kitchens: sinks, tables and hoods.
- Dairy, food and pharma factories: tanks and pipes.
- Household utensils and water tanks.
How to get a better price
- 1Use a magnet: good 304 and 316 do not stick. Strong attraction usually means iron or chrome-plated steel.
- 2Keep machine parts, welds and turnings separate from clean sheet.
- 3Ask for a grade test (XRF gun) for large industrial lots.

Is stainless steel magnetic?
304 and 316 are normally non-magnetic. Some 200-series and 400-series stainless are slightly magnetic, which is one reason they sell for less.
